Detroit Lions Syndicate content

Preparing for the NFL Combine

Although the 2008 NFL Draft is still over two months away, the time to start scouting potential picks is now.  In the next couple of months, all 32 franchises will scout hundreds of players in hopes of finding that one guy that can make their team a contender or that one sleeper that will someday become a starter.  The NFL Draft isn't the only way to make a team better with free agency being such a big deal now-a-days, but the foundation of winning franchises is usually built during the draft.   Just look at the Detroit Lions for proof of that theory.

The Matt Millen era is notorious for bad draft picks.  As funny as it may be to some, in reality this is why the Lions are still a mediocre franchise.  Rather than use previous drafts to address needs and to get the players necessary for winning, the Lions just continue to look foolish nearly every April because of the draft.  I won't say that every single draft pick has been bad since the Millen era started, but most of them have, leaving the Lions with average or below average players at many positions.  That lack of a foundation has caused the Lions to go through many disappointing seasons, and although 2007 was a step in the right direction, that doesn't really mean much when you only have to improve on 3-13.  read more »

Minor league football proposal

With the All American Football League calling it quits before it even got a chance to begin, I think it's time to revisit an old article at Railbird Central.  read more »

The following article first appeared on Railbird Central back in July of 2007 when NFL Europa disbanded. The idea is relevant once again with the All American Football League on hold. The NFL even had a relationship with the AAFL, in which it would be a sort-of minor league for NFL referees. So there's obviously a need for developmental league for the NFL.

2008 NFL Draft Live Blog - Day Two

All discussion of the NFL Draft's second day can be found in this thread.  If you have a comment, then leave one here.  I will keep this thread updated anytime something interesting or related to the Lions happens.

To start the day off, Detroit moved up to become the first team on the clock in the third-round.  They traded ahead of the St. Louis Rams and got Miami's third-round pick, but I don't see why they felt a need to move up.  I believe it was a sixth-round pick they gave up, so it'll be interesting to hear the reasoning behind that.

Detroit ended up moving ahead to take Central Florida running back Kevin Smith with the 64th pick of the draft.  As I said earlier today, I expected the Lions to draft a running back first, and that's exactly what they did.  That need is gone as Smith brings a lot to the game of football.  I'll have more on him later, but before I end this update, remember, he challenged Barry Sander's college rushing record last season.  read more »

Arrowhead Pride Community Mock Draft -- Pick #46 by the Arizona Cardinals

And with the 46th pick in the 2008 Arrowhead Pride Community Mock Draft, the Arizona Cardinals select:

Oklahoma ILB Curtis Lofton

Draft Profile

jimme with the pick:

He is the BPA at this time, and I'm not overly impressed with the Cards LBers. Lofton should be able to play inside in the Cards hybrid defense, both in the 4-3 and 3-4.  read more »

Ben Roethlisberger vs. The NFL QB Crop

We looked at the RBs. Then did so more closely. Now, a gander at the QBs in the National Football League. Again, this is just subjective opining from me, and I'm not evaluating careers, just who I think is the better bet at QB for the future.

Roy Williams, the latest Eagles obsession

With Williams, the talent has never been the question

It's no secret that Eagles fans have been obsesses with the WR position for many years now. If you listen to sports talk radio or read message boards, it seems like they talk about little else... So every month there's been a new love affair with a different WR that won't ever come here. Before the season even ended, it was Chad Johnson. The the door was pretty much closed on that one.

Soon after came the crazy Larry Fitzgerald love affair.  read more »

Tormented Fans: the Bad Luck Number

Sometimes when I tell people I fear I'll never see the Vikings win a Super Bowl, they try to assure me that I will. I'm young, and there are a lot of years left--chances are they'll win a title sometime. But "Why?" I say. The Cubs haven't won a championship in 100 years--I'm sure some Cubs fans in the last century were assured by friends that the odds are they'll see a Cub World Series win, but most assuredly some of those Cubs fans are now dead.  read more »
