NFL.com ran a mock draft that included beat writers from their respective home towns (note to NFL.com: there's nothing better than watching an ad before a full minute video of Mark Curnutte to find out a pick that takes one single second to read... goooo corporate marketing). It's Phillip Merling for you dial-up folks. Keep it simple, let us read it. I have to question that pick. Why take -- general consensus here -- the third best defensive end in the draft as your #9 pick? That would counter Marvin Lewis' theory that you just pick the best available player -- not certain position -- of the draft. Especially for a position where the team already has two highly paid pass rushers in Robert Geathers and Antwan Odom. read more »
...UPDATE...
Josh from Cincy Jungle, our Cincinnato Bengals Blog, had the following to say in terms of what it would take GM Bruce Allen to pry WR Chad Johnson away from the Bengals:
"Draft picks. With age on the front line and an assortment of B-list players at linebacker, a complete overhaul on defense is needed. The interesting assumption is that Head Coach Marvin Lewis is using key phrases like 'blow this thing up' or 'start from the ground up'. [In terms of Draft Picks], I'm expecting a second round pick.
If Chad MUST go with no chance of playing with the Bengals in 2008, then they'll take what they can get. If he doesn't, and pipes down and lets things play out, then the Bengals will milk it. Then again, our front office isn't necessarily the genius types either. But it depends on how the front office views the situation. With that said, there's really no feeling of urgency to let Chad Johnson go, right now.
Now that Shaun Smith is making public on what we already "knew" -- or thought we knew -- I realized that we haven't talked about Chad Johnson for a long time. He's not pleased, I'm sure. Most of us are simply happy not to talk about Chad. I'm bringing it up today.
If what Shaun Smith said is true, and Chad Johnson clocked Marvin Lewis in the eye, then I have serious reservations. We heard that Chad Johnson went after Lewis when the head coach attempted to stop a fight between then wide receivers coach, Hue Jackson. A punch was thrown. Though we already knew this, it was never confirmed publicly from someone in the lockerroom. We also assume that Marvin Lewis allows some anarchy in his lockerroom. But no manager would ever put up with a black eye. Even so, this challenged Johnson's assertion that the team doesn't have his back even though they kept this as far from public as possible. read more »
I predict this will be the Lance Briggs story of this year, the player acquisition rumor that never seems to go away and has enough bits of truth mixed in with the generic Redskins-love-to-spend storyline that it's too good not to be true. First:
As for where Johnson is going, rumors and misinformation abound. The Washington Redskins are drooling over an opportunity to pick up Johnson, and conspiracy theorists believe there may be a secret deal in progress.
Johnson has lobbied off season for a possible trade to the Cowboys. The Cowboys have not made a public offer at this point, however. read more »
Hey, what do you know, another Chad Johnson update. I was thinking of calling this blog SpoiledLittleBrat.com. Around the time it was announced that Chad Johnson made the Pro Bowl because a team-player like Randy Moss was taking the game off, our boy "Oil Slick" said that they will handle the situation in a private and professional manner. If you haven't seen it...
Now, bookmark this page and go take a shower to clean up. I'll wait. Consider using a Sisal bath scrub pad. Or acid. read more »
Well for starters, it can't be that hard. The Eagles haven't had any players arrested recently (just the coach's sons). In 2008 the Birds will be an angry team looking to get back on top of the NFC East. The defense will have to improve some but just for a second allow yourself to daydream about how the Eagles would play with #85 in midnight green. Downtown Reggie Brown isn't exactly turning out to be the #1 receiver we had hoped and having the elusive Kevin Curtis as a #2 is always a great Plan B. Before we get too excited let's just assess the facts and even see if this is possible. Donovan McNabb publicly pleaded for playmakers on his blog. Brian Westbrook backed him up. Chad Johnson says he wants to play for a contender. read more »
You have to give Chad Johnson credit. When he wants something, he makes it known... again, and again, and again, and again, and again...
The boys at The Phinsider want him.
Let's examine things again for those that may have either missed our diatribe or suddenly think there's a chance he'll be traded and why it won't happen. It's an easy list. read more »
Who happens to have a bad attitude.
Typically I'd just promote this prescient diary by CptChaosSidekick as it captures my thoughts on the deal. His words bear repeating:
The fact that this even went down really pisses me off. I continue to be amazed at how little the Redskins value the draft. Chad Johnson is an amazing talent but to keep fleecing our picks away is fucking annoying.
What is it that went down exactly? As ESPN tells the story... read more »
Chad Johnson has changed his name, but his jersey remained the same Sunday. The Cincinnati Bengals receiver legally changed his name from Chad Johnson to Chad Ocho Cinco, but the NFL decided against allowing him to put his name on his jersey. "While the NFL has recognized the legal name change of Chad Johnson to Chad Ocho Cinco, the league informed the Bengals today that certain issues remain to be...
